2013 is underway and it’s time to decide what you want to do with your life this year.  I am not talking about New Year’s resolutions such as losing weight or saving money but actual personal goals that you want to achieve. The difference between a resolution and a goal is that a resolution is an ongoing task to improve something and a goal is a one time achievement.  A New Year’s resolution could be to eat healthy or exercise on a regular basis and a personal goal would be to lose 25 lbs.  A New Year’s resolution could be to save more money and a personal goal would be to save $5000.

So what do you want to achieve this year?

Do you want to find a new job?  If your personal goal this year is to find a new job – where do you want to work? What do you want to be doing? Sometimes people want to find a new job because they are not happy in their current job, sometimes people want to find a new job  because they want to change their field of work and sometimes people want to find a new job because they want to earn more money.

If you want to find a new job in 2013 then update your resume and start applying.  If you are thinking about changing career fields you may have to go back to school and update your skills to make sure that you get hired.

Do you want to go back to school?  If you are a recent graduate you may want to go back to school and work towards your post grad degree such as a Master’s degree or a Doctorate.  If you are thinking about changing career fields you may have to go back to school to update your knowledge and skills in order to get your dream job.

You may not necessarily have to enroll in a four year program; you may just need to enroll in night school or an intense technical/professional program to learn a new skill or trade.  Going back to school can help you gain valuable skills and make important connections that can help you get your dream job in 2013.

Do you want to move to a new city?  Moving is a big decision that can also be a very expensive decision.  If you are planning to make a move this year make sure that the opportunity is worth the cost of moving as well as the cost of what you are leaving behind. Sometimes people move to a new city for better career opportunities, sometimes people move to a city because their spouse was transferred for their job and sometimes people move to a new city because they just need a change.

Moving to a new city is exciting because it’s a fresh start with unlimited new beginnings, but before you pack your bags make sure that you have a plan to start your life and achieve your personal goals.
