When it comes to what to do after college, there are many options to consider. In this specific series, we’re covering 7 alternatives to graduate school. After all, life isn’t always about more standardized education. As important as education is, it doesn’t always have to be formal. There’s only so much that you can learn within those four walls.

Today I’m going to go in a different direction. I’m going to get into doing absolutely nothing after college.

There are so many ways to be productive after college and to get something done. What’s the point of doing absolutely nothing after college?

You don’t get stuck in a job that you hate.

When you go after the first gig that comes your way, it’s really easy to get trapped. You get used to the paychecks, the lifestyle, and the expenses. You have a certain lifestyle. It’s going to be tough to break the cycle. It’s going to be next to impossible to break the habit of getting a steady pay check and having most of it spent by the time you get the money in your bank account. If you never start working, you’ll continue living like a college student.

You figure out what you want.

When you actually have time to sit back and reflect, you can figure out what you’re really into. When you rush straight into grad school or the first job that comes your way, you’ll never figure out what YOU really want. You’ll just be following the typical system. Do you want to figure out what you actually want out of life or do you want to accept some job that you’re going to hate?

Those are just a few reasons that I could think of for doing nothing after college. Let’s say you decide to do nothing and go wit the flow for a bit. What’s next? When should you eventually do something after college?

When a great opportunity comes your way.

You don’t want to miss out on great opportunities because you’re busy doing nothing. You also don’t want to jump at the first offer that comes your way. The irony is that you never know when something cool will fall into place. I’ve written about friends that found jobs on Facebook and other interesting stories. Sending out resumes isn’t the only way to find opportunities. Sometimes you can be in the right place at the right time. Other times you can be so talented that people are looking for you. You just never know what that great opportunity will come along and change your life forever.

When you’re 100% convinced with what YOU want to do.

Your parents, friends, and enemies are all going to tell you what to do and what they think is best for you. It’s cool to listen, but none of these people really know what’s best for you. Only you do. Only you know what you want to do. Just because you earned a degree in a specific field it doesn’t mean that you have to spend the rest of your life in it once you figure out that you hate. Life’s too short to do anything that you hate. You need to figure out what’s best for you. Others can give you tips and advice, but the final decision is ultimately all yours. I just hope that you make the right one.

That’s what the art of doing nothing after college is all about. What do you think?
