How important do you think your college major really is?

With college right around the corner it’s probably time to start picking your courses. It’s also time to decide what courses you want to take to prepare for the future. Some of you might even be still deciding on what major you want to enrol in.

I decided to do some digging around college majors that pay money.

I recently found an article on CNN Money about the college majors with the biggest payoffs. I always enjoy these lists because they remind me of where the money truly is.

I wanted to highlight the best and the worst paying majors on this list:

1. Pre-med $100,000

15. Mechanical engineering technology $63,000

As you can see both jobs pay pretty damn well. You can check out the list to see which 15 jobs made it.

This leads to an important question…

Is college all about making money?

“You have four years to be irresponsible here. Relax. Work is for people with jobs. You’ll never remember class time, but you’ll remember time you wasted hanging out with your friends. So, stay out late. Go out on a Tuesday with your friends when you have a paper due Wednesday. Spend money you don’t have. Drink ’til sunrise. The work never ends, but college does…” — Tom Petty

There’s more to the college experience. College isn’t all about your major. College is a unique time in your life.

What else is there to the college experience?

  • Getting out of your comfort zone.
  • Meeting new people.
  • Learning how to balance responsibilities.
  • Getting away from family.
  • Enjoying life.
  • Growing as a person.

What if my major doesn’t pay well?

Do you have to be absolutely concerned with your major making this list? Not really. If you’re happy with what you’re studying and want to do this type of work for the rest of your life, then who am I to stop you? I just wanted to share a list. I don’t want to attempt to convince you to switch your whole life around.

If you’re on the right track and are happy with the job prospects, then by all means keep on going.

What’s the solution to a major that doesn’t pay well?

The solution here is simple. Don’t rack up a massive amount of student debt. If you know for a fact that lucrative income opportunities don’t exist for your major, then don’t get yourself into more debt that you can handle. It’s noble to accept a profession that doesn’t pay handsomely. It just makes no sense to end up 30 grand in debt to earn a piece of paper that won’t be that valuable.

An education is an amazing. Being in debt until your 40 because of school sucks.

That’s what the importance of a college major is. How do you feel about your selection on majors?
